Brookhaven, GA, June 26, 2015 – The Post Reports – Remember all the buzz about Google Fiber coming to Brookhaven as well as the City of Atlanta, Avondale Estates, College Park, Decatur, East Point, Hapeville, Sandy Springs and Smyrna?
Google Fiber said in a release Thursday, “Today, we’re ready to start building our Google Fiber network in metro Atlanta. With the design of our Google Fiber network completed, you’ll see us around town digging and stringing fiber cables so that we can deliver Google Fiber’s superfast Internet to the city. As we lay thousands of miles of fiber-optic cable throughout Metro Atlanta, we’ll keep residents updated along the way.” — Fabiola Charles, Google Fiber Community Impact Manager, Metro Atlanta
Google Fiber’s Deployment partner, Bechtel said, “Bechtel is proud to be Google’s partner deploying fiber optic infrastructure for the long-term benefit of residents and businesses. We are committed to being good neighbors and active members of the community.” — Ashley Merriman, Customer Care Representative, Bechtel
Back in January, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed made the official announcement and unveiled the list of areas in metro-Atlanta that will be receiving the ultra-high speed solution at a Press Event.
Thursday Google says, “the work has begun.”
Looking at pricing, in the Kansas City area, Google Fiber costs are as follows:
- Gigabit + TV: $120/month ($300 construction fee waived)
- Gigabit Internet: $70/month ($300 construction fee waived)
- Basic Internet: $0/month (for up to seven years starting from the date your address was first connected to the Google Fiber network for any person) + $300 construction fee
According to Google, the average broadband speed is 9.8 Megabits per second. Google Fiber will bring customers access to “Gigabit” Internet connections up to 1,000 Megabits per second—or up to 100 times faster than basic broadband.
“Since we first announced we’d bring Google Fiber to nine cities across metro Atlanta (including Brookhaven), we’ve been hard at work designing our fiber network. Now that the design is complete, we’re ready to begin construction starting today. We’ll start in Atlanta’s midtown area and expand construction to all nine cities over the coming months,” the release says.

Will someone in authority please chat with the Google folks and explain that part of Brookhaven is in 30341, or will we just be left out?

AT&T has been installing fiber optical cable through out Brookhaven the past several weeks with the intention of offering gigabyte service to the house late fall / early winter this year. I live at the corner of Osborne Road and Windsor parkway, and spoke with a construction team that installed a new cabinet for fiber switches adjacent to Uverse cabinets on this corner. The team lead advise me that AT&T will bring the fiber optic cable into the house. Just this past week, another team was stringing fiber from the telephone poles on Windsor Parkway. I confirm with that team lead that they had been doing the same throughout Brookhaven, Chamblee, and Atlanta.

Good info. Thank you Eric. Seems like with Comcast, AT&T and Google Fiber we all may have options for ultra high speed soon.
