Brookhaven, GA, December 11, 2016 – by Trey Benton – The seventh annual Red & White Ball was held Saturday evening at Brookhaven’s Lynwood Park. The gymnasium was transformed into an elegant holiday setting and music by EJ & The Versatiles (featuring Soul of Sam), coupled with a nice meal, made the event special.
Organized by members of the Parks and Recreation Department and long-time volunteers, this event brings friends and family together as Lynwood has done for generations. John Wright delivered the Invocation and WSBTV’s Mark Winne served as Emcee.
The Red & White Ball celebrated its 7th anniversary this year, an event created by Cassandra “Sandy” Bryant and a group of ladies who were all in the same exercise group together. Around the Thanksgiving Holiday, Ms. Bryant and the City host an annual Feed the Hungry event that she also started almost ten years ago.
Ms. Bryant, who now works for Brookhaven as a Recreation Leader at Lynwood, has lived her whole life in Lynwood Park and is among several generations of her family who have done the same. And, many who attend the Red & White Ball look at it as sort of a homecoming to the former Lynwood Park High and Elementary School, now a City Community Center, that they attended when they were growing up.
The school was constructed by DeKalb County in 1949, and was the first high school for African-Americans in the area.
