Brookhaven, GA, March 7, 2017 – Contributed by Sheri L. Buehner – Boy Scout Troop 370, from St. James United Methodist Church, has formed a partnership with a scout troop in Uganda called Scouting Bridges Uganda. This past December 2016, 8 scouts and 3 adults traveled to Uganda for 12 days. While there, the scouts camped with over 60 scouts at Hope Christian School in Lugazi, Uganda.
Daily activities included 6am morning exercises, morning and evening devotionals led by the Ugandan scouts, games and crafts, as well as field trips to various Uganda attractions such as the Ugandan Equator, Coca-Cola bottling plant, and a boat ride at the source of the Nile. As well, the American scouts presented lessons on Living by the Scout Law, Leave No Trace, personal health and hygiene, and tent maintenance and set-up. The scouts had the experience of a lifetime, and made life-long friends.
One scout, Eagle Scout Jack Buehner, was able to return to Uganda for the second time. After returning from his first trip in January 2016, he realized that even though his Ugandan friends were living in a third world country and often had little or no food, they were the happiest people he had ever met; they smiled all the time, counted their blessings, and always went out of their way to help others.
Knowing that he wanted to do something to help his friends, Buehner decided to organize a shoe drive. Through the generosity of St James UMC, Riverwood International Charter School, friends, and family, he collected almost 400 pairs of shoes. He was able to take 7 large suitcases full of shoes on the trip. His Ugandan friends were excited and very grateful to receive new shoes. Each of them were able to receive a pair of closed-toed shoes, as well as a pair of sandals. Any shoes that did not make it to Uganda were donated to local homeless shelters.
Scouts and adults that attended the trip include: Jack Buehner, Sheri Buehner, Claire Denning, Doug Horn, Katie Horn, Sage Johnson, Fontaine Kohler, Jack Maley, Tallulah Ritchie, Craig Sargent, and Dereck Sargent.
Plans for this year’s trip are already underway!
