Brookhaven, GA, March 17, 2017 – by Trey Benton – If you are in Georgia’s 6th District, there is a Special Election on April 18th to fill Tom Price’s Congressional seat that was recently vacated when he was confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Trump administration. Georgia’s 6th Congressional District consists of many of the northern suburbs of Atlanta and includes eastern Cobb County, northern Fulton County, and northern DeKalb County. It includes Brookhaven, Chamblee, Dunwoody and Doraville – as well as Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, Milton and Roswell.
Heading into the election, Ballotpedia says this race as safely Republican. But during the November 2016 General Election, Donald Trump won the 6th by a slim margin of 1.5 percent over Hillary Clinton, signaling now may be the best chance in years for a Democrat to win the seat held by Price from 2004 to 2017.
With eighteen candidates in the race: 11 Republicans, 5 Democrats, and 2 Independents, it is almost certainly headed for a run-off, as the likelihood of no single candidate pulling at least 50 percent of the vote is slim (and slim just left the building). The top two vote getters (party affiliation aside) will compete in a June 20th run-off.
According to 11Alive, a recent survey of likely voters in the 6th shows Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republicans Karen Handel and Bob Gray leading the field of 18. “The poll, conducted by The Trafalgar Group (TFG), was conducted from March 2-3, 2017,” says 11Alive. “Ossoff came in first in the poll, with 18.31 percent; Handel receiving 17.98 percent; and Gray with 13.42 percent. State Sen. Judson Hill and Amy Kremer, both Republicans, came in next, followed by Democrat Ron Slotin and Republicans Dan Moody and Bruce LeVell,” the report says.
