Chamblee, GA, May 22, 2017 – by Renee Turner for The Post – A community open house was held at Mercy Care’s Chamblee Medical Clinic on Saturday, May 20th, to give the public a chance to tour the new 45,000-square-foot facility on Peachtree Road, located near the Chamblee MARTA station.
Expanding its comprehensive healthcare services, Tom Andrews, President of Mercy Care and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health System, said the new facility opened this past April. For a number of years, “Mercy Care was located at Northeast Plaza on Buford Highway in Brookhaven—for close to twenty years. This project was in the works for five years. The property was bought from Parkside [Partners],” he said.
Parkside, along with MARTA, recently participated in a groundbreaking for another Parkside development called “Trackside”, a mix-use development directly across from MARTA. Parkside was also a part of the clinic’s development team along with Smith Dalia Architects and Collins Project Management.
Sister Angela Ebberwein, Vice President of Mission Services said “Mercy Care was founded by the Sisters of Mercy.” Andrews noted that Sister Ebberwein has been with Mercy Care for nearly 25 years.
Mercy Care broke ground back in October of 2015. The $14 million facility was funded by a number of donors, including: Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta, The James M. Cox Foundation, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation, and more.
Diana Lewis, Manager of Marketing and Advocacy, was one of a handful of Mercy Care staff that gave tours throughout the two-story facility. Starting her tour in the lobby she explained, as people enter through the front entrance, “You are always welcomed by a greeter to help direct you whether downstairs or upstairs.”
While touring the state-of-the-art facility, Lewis said Mercy Care encourages making an appointment, but they do take walk-ins…whether insured or uninsured, providing wrap around services. As Lewis guided the touring group through the first floor of the medical facility, she noted that the center has the capacity to see approximately 165 patients per day – 115 adults, and around 50 pediatric patients.
As the group approached the adult patient examining area, Dr. Gabriel Onofre, who was standing with Medical Assistant Alida Rodriguez said, “I’ll get an idea of what’s going on with the patient—it’s teamwork.” In the adult patient examining area the staff checks for patience care, vital signs, and patient medical history.
The second floor has a number of rooms for various types of classes including cooking, parenting, cancer education, financial literacy, and more; plus, a large conference room, and offices for number of the partnering foundations.
