Chamblee, GA, July 17, 2017 – by Renee Turner for The Post – The DeKalb County Police Department (DCPD) is partnering with the DeKalb County Public Library (DCPL) to host two summer program series events providing community involvement activities to help form a stronger relationship with the DCPD. The programs are being held at various libraries throughout DeKalb and are entitled “Safety with a Cop” (for adults) and “Read with a Cop” (for children). The focus is on creating a connection between law enforcement and the community.
The first of the series was the Safety with Cop event held on this past Saturday at the Flat Shoals Library at 4022 Flat Shoals Parkway in Decatur. Officer B. Holloman, Major KD Johnson and Shelia O’Rear of South Precinct spoke to the group on how to avoid becoming a victim.
Officer Holloman covered tips discussing personal safety, having keys ready when going to the car, being discrete when pulling out money, identity theft, safety options, and more. He stressed always being aware of your surroundings. “So, even when you are pumping gas look around to see what’s around you and even if you are at a stop light,” he said.
When asked by an audience member about the types of crime law enforcement officers are seeing the most, Major Johnson said credit card fraud, auto theft and large flat-screen television theft in residential areas top the list.
The DCPD “Read with a Cop” series will begin at the Chamblee Library where an officer representative from the North Precinct will read to the children a selected number of books, helping to form a trusting relationship, while getting to know officers in the DeKalb community. The children will also be given a tour of a DeKalb County police car.
“We start [forging a relationship] when they’re young,” Major Johnson said. “Getting out into the community, we go to a lot of places, houses of worship, organizations and partnering events like these. We try to encourage parental involvement as much as possible.”
Sheila O’Rear, Public Education Specialist at the DCPD’s South Precinct, helped organize the programs with the DCPL. “Our goal is to keep our families engaged about the importance of safety and to reinforce the relationship between community and law enforcement,” she notes.
